6 Ways to Qualify for the Holy Ghost

“And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.”  ~Moroni, 10:5-6, The Book of Mormon

The Holy Ghost is the great revelator, a personage of spirit, and third member of the Godhead (in addition to God the Father and His son, Jesus Christ). Through His influence, we can receive spiritual understanding, a personal witness of God and the divinity of Christ, and an understanding of the truthfulness of all things. The Holy Ghost cleanses and purifies and is thus often metaphorically referred to as “fire”.  He is also called the Comforter, the Spirit, and the Holy Spirit.

“The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” ~The Apostle, Paul

While the light of Christ or the influence of the Holy Ghost can be felt by all, the “gift of the Holy Ghost” is the right to have His constant companionship as long as one is worthy. One can receive this gift is through baptism and the laying on of hands by one who is in proper authority.

So great is the importance of being able to receive personal revelation, that we must always remain worthy of His presence. Julie B. Beck, of the General Relief Society said, “The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life.”  Below are 6 ways in which we can qualify for the gift of the Holy Ghost and thus receive revelation:

1.  Desire it, having faith.

2.  Keep the commandments.

3.  Repent as needed.

4.  Be baptized or renew covenants.

5.  Read the scriptures.

6.  Pray always.

“The voice of the Spirit is described in the scriptures as being neither loud nor harsh, not a voice of thunder, neither a voice of great tumultuous noise, but rather as still and small, of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it can pierce even the very soul and cause the heart to burn. The Spirit does not get our attention by shouting.”

~Boyd K. Packer, an Apostle

“They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits; it will whisper peace and joy to their souls; it will take malice, hatred, strife and all evil from their hearts; and their whole desire will be to do good…”

~Joseph Smith to Brigham Young in a dream after his death

“If [we] would open [our] hearts to the refining influence of this unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, a glorious new spiritual dimension would come to light.”

~Joseph B. Wirthlin, an Apostle

“The Holy Ghost quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands and purifies all the natural passions and affections. . . . It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness and charity. It develops beauty of person, form and features.”

~Parley P. Pratt, an Apostle
